Formwork traveller systems for fast and safe construction

Travelling formwork can be used for a large variety of different structures, from tunnels, bridges and reservoir walls, to sea walls and walls running adjacent to rail lines. Essentially, a travelling formwork system enables the repeated construction of structural elements and so is ideally suited to long stretches of repetitive concrete forming.

Site constraints and cycle times have to be taken into account when considering using a travelling formwork system, with innovative solutions available through early collaboration, like the work we supported on the curved concrete tunnel for Crossrail’s Liverpool Lime Street Station in the UK.

Key considerations

Construction close to a live site
If construction works are close to a live road or rail line, then one of the faces of the travelling formwork system might have to act as a debris screen. For example, travelling formwork may be used along a busy rail line and therefore a debris screen will be needed to protect passing trains.
Early collaboration
The benefits of early collaboration can clearly be seen in our involvement in the Stockley Viaduct Interchange. With work taking place close to a busy train line, a traditional travelling system would not have given the on-site team the access needed to retract and clean the shutters.
