Lateral Support for Excavations

Retaining walls are typically used to support shallow heights of ground of up to three metres. In this application, adjacent site space is limited or restricted, and battering back is not an option. Retaining walls provide a vertical wall face, which maximises space at the base of the wall.

For particularly weak ground conditions or depths greater than three metres, raking props and waler beams may be needed to provide further wall support.

Key considerations

Retain both earth and water
Sheet pile walls can be used to retain earth and water on both shallow and deep excavations. For retained heights of up to three metres, sheet piles can be used in cantilever, providing the support to withstand the potential collapse of materials without the need for bracing, while keeping you safe during excavation works. For retaining walls in weak soils or with heavy loading requirements, raking props provide robust lateral support for deflection control and stabilising retaining walls, when used in combination with a waler system.
